Albino UnitedDate: 7th April, 2010 |
Marc Hoeferlin, Juan Reina and Barney Broomfield are the filmmakers behind Albino United. Shot by Barney Broomfield on a Panasonic P2 Varicam and coming soon to the True Stories strand on More4 and National Geographic, their film follows a team of Tanzanian albino football players as they use sport to try and dispel the myths that have lead to many albino killings.
For decades, the albinos of Africa - known as the 'tribe of ghosts', 'zeros zeros' or 'the invisibles' - have suffered appalling treatment at the hands of their own neighbours and are murdered for their body parts, which are believed to bring good fortune and cure all manner of ills
Despite the increasingly modern appearance of many African towns and cities, where almost everybody carries a mobile phone and the young bid to wear the latest Western fashions, many educated people still believe in black magic and traditional medicine.
The teams' first big match had been played at the National Stadium against a Parliamentary team. The match was organized on a day when 2 of Tanzania's main teams were playing and the stadium held 70,000 fans. The Albino team went down 2-0. A score they're working hard not to repeat. What ‘Albino United’ do have is team spirit. Being part of the team is a big motivator. It is empowering them to represent and spread their message.
Find out more about the team and how they get on when Albino United is broadcast on More4 and National Geographic.
