'Rock n Roll Train' is the first single taken from 'Black Ice', Acca Dacca's first new album in eight years.
Serpent Productions were chosen to produce the video, which consisted of a multi-camera shoot using 6 RED cameras, with a variety of 35mm prime and zoom lenses.
It's not just the capturing the action that proved to be a challenge though as the post production turn around had to go from shoot to approval in just one week. That week entailed offline, render to film-resolution dpx sequence for the post-effects treatment, compositing of a greenscreen as well as…

As one of the few IMAX recording facilities outside of the USA, RPS Film Imaging offers a highly specialised and unique service, capable of recording at levels up to 8K IMAX resolution.
So when the HDCAM SR tape of the latest Ford Focus commercial was sent to RPS for IMAX conversion and was found to be not up to scratch, RPS technical director Simon Burley knew he had a problem.
The copy, which featured an orchestra playing instruments constructed from Ford Focus components, was very soft and was smothered in film grain, recalls Burley, the result of a sub-standard conversion.

The HD LAB's encoding operation, is an area of the business that has grown rapidly thanks to an explosion in the range of different media formats – from Standard Definition TV to HD and Blu-ray, as well as for mobile and web-based video applications.
“People come to us because encoding requires specialist equipment and the technical experience to achieve high quality results, and our SAN has capture cards which give us the capacity to do encoding with large files,” says On Sight facilities manager Tony Maher.
For Maher, finding the best encoding route for files is a…

Future astronauts can find out more by watching a promotion film about the venture, which delves into the technology and the people behind Virgin Galactic, directed by film-maker Carl Fospero of Made in the Shade Productions.

Take That's Beautiful World Live DVD was the result of a two day shoot at the O2 Arena in Docklands, at the culmination of the group’s national tour last December.
The group wanted this DVD to look different from the pace of their last production, recalls director Matt Askew, who has worked with the band on their last two tours.
“The band didn’t want it to be a heavily cut concert – the last one was quite staccato and this time they wanted something more film-like. That was the brief – I had to translate that into something that works.”

Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday tribute concert in Hyde Park in June was one of the musical high notes of the summer – a fitting salute to the world leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner.
Named the 46664 Concert, the event was the latest in a series held around the world to raise money for Nelson Mandela’s 46664 HIV/AIDS charity. The number refers to the former South African president’s prison number on Robben Island, where he was notoriously incarcerated for 18 of his 27 years behind bars.
Timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the June 1988 Free…
Nike 'Take it to the next Level' wins Gold at Cannes
Next Level" is new take on Football from Nike. Made to inspire football obsessed teens, the film is a first-person journey up the football ranks-from being discovered by Arsenal in a youth match to a life-defining moment playing for our national side. Along the way we experience success (finishing a cross from Cesc Fabregas) as well as frustration (getting burned by Ronaldinho). The film celebrates playing the game with purpose and passion. It shows what it takes to become a modern, brilliant fofotballer - to take…
Distributors are finding that they need to keep a closer eye on the quality of masters in a world of HD production.
There’s little doubt that the business of programme distribution has gotten more complicated over the last few years. While on the one hand high quality HD formats are becoming standard, delivery requirements are anything but, differing not just from territory to territory but from client to client. The result has been a surge in demand for technical advice about HD by programme distribution companies.
Amsterdam-based distributor Off the Fence, which last November hired On Sight…
Expert advice was what Bikini film director Andy Soup needed when he decided to use Panasonic’s P2 tapeless system for the first time, on a music video shoot for artist Leon Jean Marie.
“The concept was to get all the props and furniture in Leon’s studio to move in time to the music Fantasia-style, switching between locked off live action shots and stop frame animation, using P2’s ability to switch between individual frames and live action,” says Soup, who visited
On Sight with several members of his production team to discuss the workings of the Panasonic HVX200 cameras, storage…
Son of Rambow is a project that Hammer & Tongs (Garth Jennings and Nick Goldsmith) worked on for some years. Its development was interrupted when they were asked to make The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and is their second major feature film.
The story is set during a long English summer in the early 80's where two boys are about to form an unlikely friendship. Will Proudfoot has been brought up in a strictly religious household, forbidden to watch TV or listen to music. But after Lee Carter, the school trouble-maker blows Will's mind with a pirate copy…

The first live-by-satellite 3D sports broadcast - of Scotland versus England from Murrayfield on Saturday afternoon - was a small but significant critical triumph in the history of moving pictures with rugby players in them. I have seen the future of big-event sports broadcasting and it wears funny plastic glasses and sits in the dark with its mouth wide open.
BBC Resources, in collaboration with a consortium including Axis Films, chose last weekend to trial a televisual experience intended to be several notches more immersive than you might get at home over a mug of tea and a…
Programme-makers are showing an interest in tapeless production despite the steep learning curve it requires.
If high definition has been the big story in broadcast technology in recent years then 2008 is set to be the year that tapeless production takes off. Increasing levels of HD commissions from broadcasters, coupled with the emergence of a new breed of broadcast-quality tapeless cameras is making tapeless HD a reality.
It’s a trend that hasn’t escaped On Sight head of engineering Richard Mills, who estimates that currently around 5% of TV production in the UK uses tapeless technology – a figure that is…
How film-maker Nick Broomfield’s latest film used HD to detail the reality of the War in Iraq.
Film-maker Nick Broomfield is no stranger to documenting tragedy. In 2006, he dramatised the real life story of the 23 Chinese cocklepickers who drowned at the hands of Chinese gangmasters in Morecambe Bay in 2004.
His latest film, released last month, details the true story of the killing of 24 Iraqi civilians at the hands of US troops in a revenge attack following the death of one of their own soldiers.
Both films were shot in HD using Sony HDW-750P cameras and small…
For a long time 3D movies and TV shows have been a bit of a gimmick. They have been used to re-energise a tired franchise, help a film stand out at a crowded box office or to give TV viewers a glimpse of what the future might hold.
But many in the 3D production industry now say that future may be closer than ever before. Film makers, technology companies and post-production outfits recently gathered at the historic Shepperton Studios to assess just how far…
Tangerine Films recently produced a spot for Jaguar’s new XF range, produced entirely on the Red One Camera System, with full backup & on-set support from Axis Films.
Shot on location in the south of France north of Nice & Monaco, the cameras were subjected to the extremes, mounting on fast moving tracking vehicles and attached to the cars via the Quickrig system. Helicopter Film Services also provided a Red Camera-modified Wescam for some spectacular sequences in the Verdon Gorge.

A British ROM COM without Hugh Grant, is that as much risk as it used to be? Well Director Col Spector didn’t think so when he shot the movie Someone Else a couple of years ago in Super 35mm.
The film is a kind of Bridget Jones for men and relies heavily for its ‘COM’ on ... timing. Not a problem at the time of the shoot or at the film transfer stage but it was
when Col went to get a DVD copy made that the full impact of the ‘mis’-timing hit him.
“We shot at 24…

HD filming helped to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.
Commercials showcasing the quality of high definition in recent years have tended to be big, spectacular, eye-catching affairs. But agency Young & Rubicam Singapore’s latest 30-second spot for Sony Asia, What is Beauty?, has taken a more low-key approach.
The creative brief given to directing duo Samuel Christopher at production company Hungry Man, and DoP Luke Scott, was to reveal in HD the hidden beauty of ordinary objects that wouldn’t normally get a second glance – from a car abandoned in woodland, to dead leaves, puddles, clouds or…
Yoav Segal is a man on a mission. A fire has been lit beneath him ever since his Grandfather told him stories of fascism on the streets of East London in the Thirties and the heroic men and women that held their own against it.
The sting is that the stories were true and the man portrayed in the story was really his very own Grandad.
Yoav had already made a documentary about this piece of history – when Sir Oswald Mosley’s Black Shirts were given permission to walk through the mainly Jewish area of East London. But…
Bringing the classic 1930s children’s tale Peter and the Wolf – intended by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev to introduce youngsters to the delights of orchestral music – to a new generation is easier said than done.
With children’s expectations conditioned by HD video games and 3G movies, the bar has been raised in terms of production values.
Producer Hugh Welchman and his Breakthru Films team realised that to capture a child’s imagination today, the stop-frame animation would need to exude production values that its audience would not be able to resist.
The 13-month project was made at…
P!NK’s recent Wembley Arena Concert was yet another epic HD shoot for Serpent Productions, typical of the slick style they produce on regular basis.
The event was Directed by David Mallet, shot by NEP Visions on about 20 HD Cameras at 1080/25p and posted entirely by On Sight Upstairs. On Sight digitised all the material after the shoot on multiple dedicated digitising systems for speed.

Pinewood Studios Celebrated it's 70th Birthday on the 7th July 2007 and Axis Films were there to help out.
As part of the festivities a bank heist was recreated on a disused set and Axis Films were on hand to film the action. Shooting on 4 cameras including a Polecam with Iconix Camera, we shot the gun battles between the good guys and the baddies.

After committing to a beta testing programme over a year ago On Sight found themselves one of only two companies in possession of one of the most sought after high definition broadcasting ‘pieces of kit’ in the world, the other company being the BBC.
Snell & Wilcox’s Alchemist Ph.C-HD has a legacy of the best motion compensation and standards conversion going back to the early nineties, the era of high definition meant that the proprietary algorithms had to perform that much better, On Sight were on hand to help that happen.
For Snell & Wilcox that meant looking…
Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour is a rock legend with a reputation for quality.
“As the leader of Pink Floyd, David has always been an artist who has never compromised with his work,” insists Andy Murray from Gilmour’s management company, One Fifteen.
No surprise then that when One Fifteen Management suggested he should make a DVD of his latest tour, Gilmour and director David Mallet opted for one of the highest quality HD formats available – Sony HDCAM SR.
Remember That Night: David Gilmour Live At The Royal Albert Hall was shot last May at the culmination of…
Panasonic has selected camera hire company On Sight to be its back-up hire company for the AJ-HDX900E camcorder.
The AJ-HDX900E is the "BBC's preferred camera for factual and learning," says Panasonic. On Sight has purchased five camcorders and says it is experiencing high demand for HD from all areas of programming.
Film-maker Heath Jones’ first film, Lady Godiva: Back in the Saddle, had an unusual inspiration.
The chance purchase of a box of Godiva Belgian chocolates in a Detroit airport gave the film’s US based screenwriter and producer the idea for a film based on the famous lady’s naked ride through the city of Coventry in the 11th century.
Set for a cinema and DVD release this autumn, the £3.5m British comedy from Koralis Productions is a romp in The Full Monty tradition, centering on controversial plans to build a casino in the city’s memorial park.

Nick Broomfield is leading the way for a new generation of film-makers turning to high-definition shooting.
Over the years, Nick Broomfield has perfected his own, individual filmmaking technique. His documentary portraits – from rock singer Courtney Love to white supremacist South African Eugène Terre’Blanche – have been intimate portraits shot with a skeleton crew.
Which is one reason that he doesn’t like using film formats such as 35mm for his work. “A film camera dictates a lot of things. It has a huge impact on the production in terms of the number of personnel,” declares Broomfield.
“Shoots get…
It’s hard to overestimate the importance of the E3 games expo to a company like Sony.
As the electronics industry’s biggest annual showcase it’s where the next generation of cutting-edge gaming technology is unveiled to an eager audience of 60,000 industry professionals.
So there was a lot riding on the launch of its high definition PlayStation 3 games console and on the quality of the videos and trailers which Sony needed to prepare for the launch.
Says Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s Arran Green: “Once you could get away with simple images to promote consoles and games but…
High-definition was the only choice for shooting Elton John’s musical spectacular The Red Piano.
Celine Dion’s legendary music extravaganza at Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas now has a rival in the shape of Elton John’s The Red Piano – a similarly super-charged visual spectacular guaranteed to send Elton fans into raptures.
For those unable to make the trip to Nevada, it was decided to make a televised version of the show in high-definition – the perfect format for capturing the show’s dazzling visuals. But capturing The Red Piano for a US network special on NBC and a DVD for release…
How On Sight conjured up a few moves of its own when it put together Ocelot Productions' compendium of trendy tricks - The Book of Cool.
Ocelot Productions producer/director Fred Rees had been planning this project since early in 2004. ”The book of cool was a concept that grew out of an idea to make a football skills video, but I wanted to spread the net much wider than football by tracking down some of the coolest tricks on the planet and get some of the best in the world to give us a masterclass,” says Rees.
Rees had…
Jim Henson's Mirrormask, the innovative debut feature film of Dave McKean, is the first film in this country to output onto the new HDCAM SR format.
"As the film's producer, it was important for me, using a brand new technology, that not only could On Sight supply the equipment we needed, but, more importantly, they understood how it worked - and as a bonus, provided a service that alway came with a smile."
Simon Moorhead, producer, Mirrormask
Cutting edge technology was instrumental in creating the right look for a film on the steel industry.
Given that the assignment involved making a short film about British Asian steel millionaire Lakshmi Mittal, the richest man in Britain, you might assume that Connected Pictures would have gone for film - the most expensive format. but producer Adam Penny had a different aim: "We wanted it to be made using cutting edge technology because Mittal is at the forefront of the steel industry."
The solution was to use an On Sight Panasonic Varicam camcorder, combined with a swing and…
An altogether bigger show handled at On Sight's HD Lab is Gerry Anderson's New Captain Scarlet, an all new 26-part CGI programme with new scripts, characters and stories.
The show, produced by Anderson Entertainment for broadcast in February 2005, has kept a 130-strong production team busy at Pinewood, with four teams including animators and TDs taking eight weeks to complete each 22 minute episode.
The show was edited by Andy Walter and finally conformed using Final Cut Pro HD at Anderson's Pinewood HQ. Phil Stone, the online editor, played out the programme to Sony HDCAM, which was then…
Andrea Vecchiato is one of a pioneering new breed of film directors making the most of the creative potential of HD production.
Filmmakers have often been sniffy abouot the use of new formats such as HD over 35mm film, but for director Andrea Vecchiato has a message for them. "They should not be so lazy," he declares. "In fact, it upsets me when I talk to DoPs who think that 35mm film will always be better."
And Vecchiato knows what he is talking about. He shot Hadaly Pictures' Luminal, an adaptation of Italian writer Isabella Santacroce's shockingly futuristic…
